A Comparative Study of Attitudes Toward Mental Health of Nursing Students and Non-Nursing Students


Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to identify attitudes toward mental health of nursing students and non-nursing students.
The instrument used in this study was a multiple choice association questionnaire introduced by Nunnally (1961) referred to as they Mental Health Opinion Questionnaire". The questionnaire was consisted of 20 items which yield six dimensions by this writer: Psychotic patient, neurotic .patient, mental health, mental disease, mental hospital, psychiatrist.
The subjects of this study were 183 nursing students and 151 non, nursing students from 4 universities in Seoul. The subjects were females who enrolled in the second semester of 1974.
The nursing students had not been exposed in the area of psychiatry and psychiatric nursing at that period. All students were tested,in a group setting in the classroom.
The findings of Nunnally¢¥s study were viewed for comparison. The results of this study were as follows:
1) The selected nursing students and non-nursing students, in Korea revealed negative and rejecting attitudes toward mental health.
2) There were a lack of information and knowledge of mental health and mental illness among study population.
3) The negative attitudes of the mentally ill were- based -more on fears of patients.
4) The nursing students held feelings and conceptions on the stigma attached.
